Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
