No fewer than 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
